15 Minutes at Good Morning America

On Wednesday (June 15), Barry Manilow released his first album of new material since 2001. "15 Minutes" is a concept album -- telling the story of a singer who experiences the highs and lows of the fame machine.


"I've been having a lot of success with the cover songs," says Manilow, who has been releasing a steady stream of greatest hits albums for the past decade, "but I missed writing, so that's what [15 Minutes] is."
"These days, it seems to be more magnified than ever," Manilow tells ABC News.  "Especially with reality shows like 'American Idol.' These young people get fame out of the blue, and I've been there, and it is difficult to handle when it hits you at any time."

In another recent interview, Manilow said the idea from the album occurred to him when Britney Spears was in the midst of her public meltdown. "Is this the price of fame?" he wondered.

Manilow performed one of his new songs on Wednesday's "Good Morning America":
