Father's Day is coming up Sunday, so it's time to start thinking about gifts. I don't know about you, but it is always a bit of a challenge for me, especially if the budget is tight.
I must admit, I have given my dad some really bad Father's Day gifts over the years (sorry, Dad). And now my kids are carrying on the tradition with their father. But this year I am doing something different. So if you are searching for something beyond the ugly tie for a suitless guy or that homemade ashtray for a non-smoker, an interview is a thoughtful and affordable Father's Day gift idea to consider.
Interview your children about their father and record their comments on paper.
If your little ones are in preschool or elementary school, no doubt they have come home with a list of questions and answers about mom or dad. You could do that on your own and put the questions and answers in a card or a picture frame.
If your child can read and write, an interview on paper is also a great way to add some writing practice to the summer break. Plus, their adorable handwriting adds a little character to the gift.
In the same vein, you could also interview your child on video. This can be done very simply with an iPod or point and shoot camera that has a video function. The kids can crawl up in a chair with Dad to play back the recording. Or you could upload it to a computer to watch.
Another thing you could do is use a video camera that connects to your TV to show the interview. Or, if you want to get really fancy, you can use video editing software to produce a more polished video.
But no matter how you execute it, it's a low cost or no cost Father's Day gift that is sure to be remembered. Additionaly, the interview gift idea is not limited to little kids; this has the potential to be very meaningful coming from an older child or even one who is grown.
