Sutherland a bit short to repeat

Pittsford Sutherland’s bid to become Section V’s first repeat state champion in baseball fell one victory short as the Knights lost to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 8-2 in the Class A title game this afternoon.

The Knights finished 24-3, losing to the Section II champion in a game delayed nearly 24 hours because of endless rain on Saturday evening.

The turning point came quickly — in the first inning.

Sutherland threatened in the top of the inning by loading the bases with a leadoff single by Hunter Merrill, a one-out single by Brad Kaczka and walk to Zach Salvia. But Spartans starter Devin Stark escaped as Nick Barra fouled out down the right-field line, and right fielder Jayson Sullivan then fired a strike to the plate to nail Merrill on the tag-up.

In the bottom of the first, Burnt Hills (17-10) scored three times. Keaton Flint laced a two-run double into the left-field corner and scored on a Jeff Heck single.

The Knights also had a runner gunned down at home in the third. Salvia bashed a double off the wall in left but the relay from shortstop Bret Dennis cut down Kaczka at home.Dennis will attend St. John’s University of a scholarship, the same school that is bringing in Aquinas shortstop Chris Bostick.

The Spartans’ lead ballooned to 6-0 in the fifth on a two-run double by Mike Brienza.
Sutherland scored twice in the sixth, using a bases-loaded ground out by Grant Heyman and single by Jeff Kay, but three runners were stranded.
