Charlize Theron has been fighting for marriage equality, but said in a recent interview that marriage has never been something that was important to her.The 35-year-old Oscar winner said in an interview set to air Thursday on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight, that she believes marriage is a "divine right," but has no interest in getting married in the future.
"Marriage was never something that was important, I don't know the reason for that," Theron said. Some would say that it's because I came from a very troubled marriage, my parents did not have a good marriage, but I don't think it's that."Theron dated Irish actor Stuart Townsend for nearly a decade before splitting up in January 2010. The two co-starred together in the 2002 film "Trapped" and the 2004 film "Head in the Clouds."
"I really want for myself a long-term relationship, and I have been in long-term relationships," Theron said. "That's the kind of union that I want. The actual ceremony is not something that is important to me, but I see the importance for other people."
Last week, New York State Senate voted in favor of marriage equality. Reuters did reporte that the marriage equality law is expected to bring an estimated $284 million to New York's economy and an estimated 21,000 gay and lesbian couples from New York would marry within three years and nearly 42,000 gay and lesbian couples would come to New York for destination weddings.19
"When government starts to tell us who can love and what is good love... I do have a problem with that," Theron said. "I do have a problem with the fact that our government hasn't stepped up enough to make this federal, to make [gay marriage] legal. I think everybody has that right."4
Theron grew up in South Africa and rose to fame appearing in movies like "The Devil's Advocate" and "The Cider House Rules." She received an Academy Award for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 film "Monster."The actress recently finished shooting Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," and in August, she begins shooting "Snow White and the Huntsman," in which she'll play the evil queen opposite Kristen Stewart, who stars as Snow White.Revelator
