Jack White and Karen Elson aren’t the first spouses to celebrate a coming divorce. But they’re surely among the only ones to do it this way: They’re celebrating together.
The Detroit-born rocker and his supermodel wife will mark their just-announced split with a party tonight in Nashville, to include “dancing, photos, memories and drinks with alcohol in them,” according to a whimsical invitation sent to friends and family.
The couple were married in June 2005 at an intimate ceremony in Brazil, where White Stripes drummer Meg White — his former wife — served as maid of honor. Jack White soon bid farewell to Detroit as the couple settled in Nashville.
White and Elson said in a statement today that “we remain dear and trusted friends and co-parents to our wonderful children Scarlett and Henry Lee. We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow. In honor of that time shared, we are throwing a divorce party.”
Rolling Stone magazine reports that White attended Elson’s musical performance Thursday at the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee, where she was backed by Raconteurs rhythm section Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence.
The divorce party invitation concluded: “Please help us celebrate together this anniversary of the making and breaking of the sacred union of marriage with our best friends and animals.”
